Q. Are titles pages and contents pages included in the word count?

Any preliminaries - things like title pages, acknowledgements, contents pages, table of tables, table of figures are not included in your word count. 

There may, of course, be exceptions so you need to check your module handbook or check with your tutor to make sure.
